Brentford manager's halftime message to players that inspired win vs Liverpool

1 week ago 31

Keith Andrews believes his Brentford players were rewarded for their boldness against Liverpool.

The Bees condemned the Reds to a fourth consecutive Premier League loss for the first time since February 2021 with a well-earned 3-2 victory at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.

Dango Ouattara, Kevin Schade, and an Igor Thiago penalty found the net for Brentford, with Liverpool responding through strikes from Milos Kerkez and Mohamed Salah at the conclusion of each half. Brentford has now defeated the Reds and Manchester United at home while securing a draw against Chelsea. And Andrews commented: "Was it about fearlessness? Probably.

"But it takes a lot more than that clearly, structure and desire and resilience and character.

"When they get the goal just before half-time and what that can do for a team, it's two games in a row that's happened and the message was to take the game to them second half.

"That was the key for me. You could feed their confidence if you take a step back, and we didn't allow that.

"The team is growing and the relationships in the group have been important going forward.

"The result was one that I think we deserved. I didn't feel I could change the team after Monday night (winning at West Ham). We were excellent in that system."

Following a sluggish beginning to the campaign, Brentford is now merely two points adrift of a Liverpool side which has already suffered as many Premier League defeats – four – as throughout the entirety of last season.

Andrews further commented: "I'm delighted with how things are going.

"It was a slow burner at the start of the season understandably, but I could see the evolution of the group on a daily basis.

"We've just beaten the Premier League champions so this result ranks pretty highly.

"We dealt with what Liverpool were trying to do by problem-solving on the pitch.

"It's a big result for the football club but it could be a big result about it being the nature of our development."
