Cafu ‘confident’ Milan can fight for Scudetto but warns they are ‘behind’ on paper

Cafu believes AC Milan can fight for the Scudetto this upcoming season, even if they are ‘behind’ rivals such as Inter and Napoli on paper.

Milan have made just three signings so far despite the fact that the pre-season will officially kick off next week, with the friendlies against Arsenal and Liverpool. It has resulted in some concern among the fans, as well as pundits, former players and so on.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport about the Rossoneri’s chances, the club legend Cafu made it clear that he’s confident, above all thanks to the lack of European commitments. However, he also admitted that Milan are behind their rivals on paper.

Allegri and Milan left for the pre-season tour without any starting full-backs. A handicap?

“Having a full squad as soon as possible is an advantage, but the season is still over a month away, and Milan will be ready. I’m confident the right reinforcements will arrive.”

Then it will be up to Max to make them worth it…

“I have no doubts about his arrival: he’s a hard-working manager, and we just need to give him time to put his game into practice. The results will come.”

Can Milan fight for the Scudetto?

“I hope so. Without European competition, we’ll be able to focus solely on the league and the Coppa Italia, and that could be an advantage for a team that will change a lot compared to last season.”

Are Napoli and Inter at risk of widening the gap with the Rossoneri with the signings they’ve made and those they plan to make?

“Napoli and Inter are coming off strong seasons and have both started strongly in the transfer market. Inter, with Lookman, would pull off a Scudetto-winning signing, but Conte with the additions of De Bruyne, Beukema, and Lucca, can also be competitive on all fronts. On paper, Milan are behind, but I’m still confident.”

It remains to be seen how Milan will fare under Max Allegri. The only certainty is that it will be a very different team compared to last season, with different mechanisms and personnel. Perhaps a few more signings can change the outlook a little bit on paper as well.
