Fabio Capello believes that Inter are the favourites to win the Scudetto this season because of their squad depth, which AC Milan lack.
It is certainly shaping up to be one of the most interesting title battles, given that there are currently at least four teams in the running and arguably more. Milan had their time in top spot recently but it was brief, as they were overtaken by city rivals Inter after drawing against Sassuolo at the weekend.
If the Rossoneri are to take the Scudetto battle deep, they will have to figure out a way to beat the lesser-ranking sides. Already in 2025-26 they have dropped points against Cremonese, Pisa, Parma and most recently the Neroverdi, while winning almost every direct clash against a top four rival.
Capello was interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport this morning about the race for the title, just as another ex-Milan boss was in Arrigo Sacchi. He shared a few of the same concerns about the Diavolo.
Are Inter the favourites?
“Yes: they have more players and can rest ThuLa, for example, with substitutes that no other competitor has in their squad. Good rotation, the kind that allows the team to maintain its level, can bring important results.
“Milan and Napoli don’t have the same level of substitutes, although I’d put the Azzurri behind Inter once they’ve recovered all their injuries. The other teams will be fighting for a Champions League spot.”

What about Milan?
“They’re a strange team: they struggle against opponents they should dominate on paper, while they don’t play with the same focus they do against the big teams. They’re dropping important points.
“Even though Pulisic ‘s disallowed goal against Sassuolo is something that only happens in Italy, with these referees and VAR who understand little about football. It’s not a dance, where the first push is called for a foul. But Sunday’s possession was sterile, too lateral, boring.
“Much will depend on the results that Inter, Napoli, and Juve achieve in the Champions League, as will Roma in the Europa League, which they are still in contention for.
“In this regard, Milan remains the favorite: having the opportunity to prepare only for the league, without European competitions, the Super Cup, or the Coppa Italia, is a huge advantage.”
