Capello explains why Milan ‘need to fight for the Scudetto’ in 2025-26

Fabio Capello believes that AC Milan have the duty to compete for the Scudetto given that they will have a season without European competitions.

Coming into the new campaign, there is a lot of intrigue about how Milan will do after making big changes in the summer. The Rossoneri might have finished eighth last season, but the change in coach to Massimiliano Allegri and the lack of European football could see a sharp rise.

Napoli are the favourites at present and for good reason given that they have strengthened in the window after winning the league. Inter and Juventus are also ones to watch out for, as well as Roma who have been excellent in 2025.

Capello gave an interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport in which he gave a bit of a preview of the 2025-26 season, including his former club Milan, and his comments are via MilanPress.

Do Milan have to go for the title?

“I think Allegri can do something similar to what Conte did at Napoli last year. If a club like Milan is out of Europe, they must compete for the Scudetto, even more so if they’ve banked on a coach with a certain pedigree and a capable sporting director like Igli Tare this summer.

“Returning to the Champions League is the minimum objective – they need to fight for the Scudetto.”

Rasmus Hojlund is linked…

“I like him, he gives me the feeling that he has everything it takes to explode. He didn’t score much in Manchester, but that’s mainly because he lacked luck in front of goal. He’s a centre-forward who moves well and is only 22 years old.”

Which players do you expect the most from?

“I’d say Soule and Leao. The Roma Argentine impressed me in the Liverpool test, I think he’s ready to take the spotlight and rise to Dybala’s level.

“As for Leao, however, the question is always the same: will he finally find consistency? Now that the ‘handle’ at Milan has changed , with an experienced coach like Allegri, Rafa can no longer have any excuses.”
