While waiting to learn the next official move by the City of Milan regarding the sale of San Siro to Inter and AC Milan, another obstacle has emerged.
The new stadium project involving the two Milan clubs descended into farce a few years ago, but every week it seems a new episode of the soap opera is added. Earlier in the summer we provided a summary of the key recent events in an article on our Substack.
Another worrying letter
As Calcio e Finanza report, there is now another issue: a letter has arrived at the city hall, also sent to other entities by lawyer Veronica Dini on behalf of the Committee promoting the ‘Referendum for San Siro’. It asks not to continue with the process of selling the facility and surrounding areas.
“Starting September 11th , the second tier of the San Siro Stadium will certainly be subject to architectural restrictions and cannot be sold without verification of its cultural interest,” it states. Furthermore, the Committee “warns” the municipal administration “against proceeding with the sale of the Meazza”.

The lawyer also asks other bodies, including the Ministry of Culture, “to monitor the correctness of the actions of the offices involved, in order to prevent the commission of an illegitimate administrative act and the completion of a sale that would be irremediably null and void and which, moreover, would expose the Municipality to significant financial damage and the city as a whole to the loss of an extremely important public asset.”
The Superintendency of Cultural Heritage has already established that the architectural restriction for the second tier will come into effect on November 10th. Once the stadium is protected, it can no longer be demolished, so there is a natural deadline.
The latter adds that there is evidence that the restriction on the second tier should come into effect on September 11th because of a video from the Istituto Luce taken on the occasion of a match between Milan and Dynamo Moscow that apparently took place on 4 September 1955.
Furthermore, it adds that there was a derby on 11 September 1955, which Milan won against Inter 6-4. It was a friendly as a sort of celebration for the renovated San Siro stadium, and the archives show the second tier has been completed.
