Charlton Athletic's home game against Portsmouth was called off due to a medical incident in the crowd.
The Championship game had been underway for around 15 minutes when the referee halted play so that medical assistance could be provided in the Covered End Lower. Players were then escorted off the pitch as the medical intervention continued. A lengthy delay of about 45 minutes ensued while it was decided whether the match would resume, before the official announcement of the abandonment was made.
Spectators at the match reported that those near the incident swiftly alerted stewards and match officials, leading to the suspension of the game and the provision of emergency medical care.
Reports suggest that the affected supporter was then moved from the stand on a stretcher for further treatment.
Following an announcement over the PA system, there was heartfelt applause from both Charlton and Portsmouth fans.
The match at the Valley was one of three second-tier games that kicked off at 12:30pm local time (7:30am ET).
However, as the other two matches reached half-time, supporters were informed that it would be some time before any definitive update regarding the resumption of the game could be given.
Shortly after this, it was confirmed that the match would not continue.
A statement from Charlton read: "Due to a medical emergency in the crowd, today's match has been abandoned.
"We thank you for your patience and understanding.
"Everyone at the club sends their best wishes to the supporter affected and thank our medical team and first responders.
"Information on when the match will be rescheduled will be announced in due course."
The EFL's official account replied to Chartlon on X: "Sending our very best wishes to the supporter affected."
Charlton entered the game languishing in the lower reaches of the Championship table, having suffered four consecutive defeats.
Portsmouth was in even more urgent need of points, with just a single victory in their previous nine matches, leaving the team stranded in the relegation zone.
