Chelsea were beaten 2-1 at the hands of Aston Villa on Saturday evening and something that happened after the full-time whistle is now being investigated by the club

Chelsea are investigating an incident after the full-time whistle where a plastic water bottle was thrown at the Aston Villa bench, football.london understands.

Shortly following Stuart Attwell's whistle to mark the end of the match, a plastic bottle was aimed towards the Villa dugout. The water from the bottle got some of the Villa substitutes and staff wet and an investigation from Chelsea has now been launched. The Blues will cooperate with Villa and possibly the authorities to get to the bottom of the matter.

The match on Saturday evening - that finished 2-1 to Villa following their second-half fightback - was a feisty affair that saw referee Attwell dish out a total of eight yellow cards with tempers still clearly high after the full-time whistle.

Joao Pedro gave Chelsea the lead in the first-half after he flicked on Reece James' corner. The Blues could have had more goals but were left to rue missed opportunities when Ollie Watkins levelled the match on 63 minutes. Watkins, on as a second-half substitute, then won the game with six minutes of normal time remaining with a fine header past Robert Sanchez.

Enzo Maresca, who was forced to watch the game from the stands at Stamford Bridge as he served his one-match touchline ban, was disappointed with his team's inability to manage their lead. Speaking post-match, the Chelsea head coach said: "I think the goal we conceded for sure changed the dynamic of the game. I don't know if it's the three changes, but for sure, until the goal we conceded, we were in control. I think by the time we conceded the first goal, we should have scored two or three goals.

"And then after the goal we conceded, the game completely changed. For sure, we have to be clinical because, again, as I said, by the time they scored the goal, I think we should have scored two or three goals and the game is different. But also, it's probably how we can improve after we concede a goal to manage the game a little bit better, probably, in terms of game after game experience, these kind of things."
