Chelsea sent 'perfect' Alejandro Garnacho verdict after moment vs Benfica

Ally McCoist has praised the impact made by Alejandro Garnacho after the Chelsea star played a key role in the opening goal against Benfica.

Garnacho was included in the Chelsea starting line-up by head coach Enzo Maresca for the Champions League clash against Benfica, with former manager Jose Mourinho in the opposition dugout.

Chelsea went into the game on the back of a 3-1 defeat to Brighton in the Premier League at the weekend, with Garnacho being handed his second start since his move from Manchester United on transfer deadline day.

Garnacho was involved in the opening goal of the night as he forced an own goal from Richard Rios of Benfica. The Chelsea star was praised by McCoist, who was on commentary duty for TNT Sports for the fixture at Stamford Bridge.

"I was critical of him [Garnacho] 20 minutes ago when he was too far out and not in the position. That's exactly where he should be.

"There you go, perfect, cuts it back and the midfielder [Richard] Rios has no chance."

Chelsea were without several key players for the clash against Benfica due to injury.

Cole Palmer, Tosin Adarabioyo, Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Liam Delap, Dario Essugo, and Andrey Santos were all on the sidelines for the fixture, while Joao Pedro was named on the bench after a fitness scare in the days leading up to the fixture.

Moises Caicedo was also a doubt for Chelsea for the clash with Benfica, but the midfielder was named in the starting line-up by Maresca after taking part in the club's training session on Monday afternoon.

Chelsea can end the 2024/25 Premier League season on a high, but it is never quiet at Stamford Bridge and the summer looks set to be one full of news, with Enzo Maresca looking for transfer to bolster his squad.
