Cristian Chivu has suggested that both Inter and AC Milan don’t deserve to be at the Supercoppa Italiana, given how last season went.
It is the second season in a row in which Milan have benefitted from it being a four-team format. They qualified for the last Supercoppa by finishing second rather than by winning the league or the cup, and this year the Rossoneri are participants because they were Coppa Italia runners-up.
Inter also emerged from 2024-25 with no silverware despite being close on various fronts, so if it were the previous format – the league winner against the cup winner – we would actually be looking at a Napoli versus Bologna final.
Speaking at a press conference on the eve of Inter’s semi-final against Bologna, Chivu also answered a question about the competition’s format, which for several years has seen four teams participate. His comments were relayed by MilanPress.
“Maybe we didn’t deserve to be here, but we’re taking advantage of the new format. Usually, the Italian champions and the Coppa Italia champions are playing. They’ve given us and Milan a gift. We’ll play our best. We have to play game after game with desire and determination.
“Head-to-head matches? We have to give our all, because no one gives us anything. We come out winners or losers, but we come out with our heads held high after putting in all our effort.”
