CM: ‘An exceptional iconic structure’ – blueprint laid down for Milan and Inter’s new home

The first clues have arrived as to what the future new stadium for AC Milan and Inter will be like when finally built.

In case you missed the big news, the Milan City Council voted to approve the sale of the current San Siro and surrounding area to the two clubs. They then plan to build a new home next to the existing structure, which will be partly demolished as part of an area regeneration plan.

If you have questions about the development – which would be understandable – we answered the 10 key ones in a recent future. More insight has now come though, from one of the two architects chosen to design the new San Siro: Lord Norman Foster.

Clues from Foster

The architect – speaking at the fourth edition of Next Design Perspectives at the Milan Triennale – provided some superficial insights into what the San Siro of the future will look like.

“We are at the beginning of a journey that must respect the legacy of this historic stadium but also create something new. It’s an extraordinary project.

“Two teams, two owners, the city, and an exceptional iconic structure. But the historical moment tells us that there is inevitably a need for a new stadium. Everyone has a strong interest in this, including the fans.”

These comments follow a meeting between Foster and David Manica at the City Hall with Mayor Beppe Sala and representatives of Oaktree and RedBird, as well as the presidents of Milan and Inter, Paolo Scaroni and Giuseppe Marotta.

The meeting was held while the entire process for the sale of the Milanese stadium is finalised and completed, which should happen in the next two or three weeks.
