Santiago Gimenez wants to play a key role in AC Milan’s season finale, and a plan has been drawn up for his return to action.
Nearly two months after undergoing surgery on his right ankle in Amsterdam to resolve the issues that severely hampered him from August to the end of October, Gimenez said on social media that he is getting closer to a full recovery.
Counting down the days
Calciomercato.com write that the striker has entered the final, crucial phase of his recovery from surgery, meaning his return to the pitch is closer. Given the issues keeping forwards fit this season – Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic above all – he could be an added resource.
Gimenez has scored a total of seven goals in 30 appearances for Milan and has performed below expectations. So much so that the management had considered selling him in the summer, also including a swap deal with Roma for Artem Dovbyk.

Before his surgery, they would have also listened to bids in January too. Gimenez for his part has never actually opened the door, eager to fight for a spot after Milan spent €35m on him, following 65 goals in 105 appearances in the Netherlands for Feyenoord.
If Milan’s estimated recovery time is met, his return to the squad could be set for the match against Lazio on March 15th onwards. Before the end of that month, the Rossoneri will face Torino. In terms of full fitness, he could potentially be available for the match against Napoli on April 4th.
The Mexican is also aiming for a strong finish to secure a call-up to his national team for this summer’s World Cup. First of all, he will return to training with the team between the end of February and the beginning of March, then focus on Milan.
