CM: How Ibrahimovic is helping Milan leapfrog Inter in Leoni pursuit

9 hours ago 23

Giovanni Leoni hasn’t been removed from AC Milan’s radar in recent weeks, despite heavy links with Inter, and the Rossoneri could even overtake their city rivals thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

While the centre-back position is far from a priority, Milan have been studying the idea of bringing in a new one this summer. A departure would obviously be needed and for a while, it looked like Malick Thiaw had one foot out the door.

However, then he rejected Como and Milan’s centre-back pursuit was put on hold. Leoni was mentioned as one of the main targets before that, but the turn of events resulted in Inter advancing for the Parma youngster. Now, another switch could be on the cards.

Milan could overtake Inter

According to Calciomercato.com, Milan haven’t taken their eyes off Leoni and he remains one of the main targets for the defence. Max Allegri is a big fan of the player, as is Ibrahimovic, and Leoni’s agent even warned Inter that an attempt from the Rossoneri could come.

Furthermore, as the report continues, Ibrahimovic has a relationship with Leoni’s family already. In that sense, the Swede has made great progress in convincing the player to join Milan, even if an agreement with Parma will be needed too.

The initial price tag is set at €35m, which is very high, and both Milanese clubs would need to offload before making a move. Thiaw could still pack his bags, which would free up money for Milan, but Calhanoglu (who was meant to provide the cash for Inter) might stay after all.
