CM: Maignan unlikely to renew – Milan eye Cagliari and Parma duo as replacements

AC Milan are beginning to think about the future between the posts, with two goalkeepers earmarked as potential targets.

Calciomercato.com start their report by outlining a rather worrying state of affairs: Mike Maignan could leave Milan for free. Negotiations for a renewal have been stalled for many months now and risk ending in a deadlock, with his deal expiring next June.

Maignan has given so much to Milan (the 19th Scudetto, a Champions League semi-final run and the Supercoppa Italiana) and managed to establish himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world while at the club.

However, all cycles have a beginning and an end, and the final credits are approaching for the Frenchman, as negotiations for his renewal remain stuck. Igli Tare will make a desperate attempt, but at the moment the chances of reaching an agreement are low.

Possible replacements

Giorgio Furlani and Tare do not want to be caught unprepared, so they are shopping around. They had already begun their initial negotiations with Zion Suzuki in the summer, when Maignan looked Chelsea-bound, but then they put things on ice when he stayed.

At that stage, the sporting director had identified Suzuki as the best possible candidate to take over, but Parma never opened the door to a sale. In the coming months, Milan will closely monitor the Japanese goalkeeper, who arrived in Italy in the summer of 2024 for €10m from St-Truiden.

Another option they like is Elia Caprile, who Cagliari signed from Napoli last summer for €8m. The Italian is establishing himself as one of the league’s top performers and Milan have already had several contacts with his agents, which could become more in-depth, Maignan permitting.
