Santiago Gimenez’s slow start to the season has reignited doubts about the striker position, and AC Milan could move to resolve them.

As Calciomercato.com report, should Gimenez’s dry spell in front of goal continue, it’s not out of the question that Igli Tare and co. could make a move to sign a new centre-forward as early as the winter window.

Ironically, it would be to fix an issue that the Mexican – a January signing from Feyenoord – was meant to fix a year ago, when Milan were also experiencing problems in the No.9 role.

Among the names that has been mentioned in the last week is Jonathan Burkardt, a 25-year-old striker at Eintracht Frankfurt who is doing very well in the Bundesliga. After 18 goals in 29 appearances last season, he’s already scored six in seven appearances for his new club.

Last January’s choice

Speaking of winter windows, in the January 2025 mercato Milan had their sights set on Burkardt, who was then shining for Mainz. Scouts’ reports were very positive, but in the end the Rossoneri decided to pursue Feyenoord’s Gimenez because the talks were decidedly more advanced.

Eintracht Frankfurt – a club always very astute in the transfer market when it comes to acquiring talent – accelerated to sign the striker for €21m in the summer. Now, they have no intention of selling him unless they receive truly irresistible offers.
