AC Milan will sign a central defender in the January window, a report claims, and Igli Tare has a number one target in mind.
According to Calciomercato.com, Lazio’s Mario Gila is a candidate to star in the upcoming winter mercato. The Spaniard was brought to Italy by current Milan sporting director Igli Tare from Real Madrid in 2022, and now he wants to hand him to Massimiliano Allegri.
Given his technical and physical characteristics, Gila would be a perfect fit for the 3-5-2 system that Milan are using. It’s unlikely that Gila will make a move mid-season because he’s absolutely central to Maurizio Sarri’s plans, but everything will depend on the eventual offer.
Complications and competition
Gila arrived at Lazio in the summer of 2022 from Real Madrid for €6m plus 50% of any future resale. This is a formula often used by Real Madrid to potentially bring players back to the Spanish capital if they shine elsewhere.
Furthermore, there is a special clause for Real Madrid: they can match any offers from other clubs to get the player back at half the price. Gila has a contract until 2027, and so far Lazio’s attempts to extend it have not yielded the desired results, with the €1m net per year offer not enough.

Gila is attracting interest from the Premier League. After being close to joining Bournemouth, there are other English clubs keen, even if Lotito will only sell him for a truly significant offer. Real Madrid, for their part, don’t currently seem interesting in re-signing the 25-year-old.
What will Milan do? Tare has a strong relationship with both Gila and his entourage, and he’ll be using this to gain an edge over the formidable competition, especially in Italy with Inter and Juventus keen.
Gila is currently at the top of a list that also includes Kim Min-jae of Bayern Munich and Thomas Kristensen of Udinese. Gila is ready for a new adventure, and Milan will try.
