AC Milan’s season is already beginning to take on some remarkable similarities compared to Napoli’s 2024-25 campaign, not that Massimiliano Allegri is bothered.
Milan suffered a bitter exit from the Coppa Italia in the round of 16 against Lazio that once again highlighted various shortcomings in the squad, especially given that Allegri chose to make five changes and didn’t get the right answers from most.
A remarkable coincidence
Milan started the season by losing to Cremonese, while Napoli did the same last season with a 3-0 defeat away from home against Hellas Verona.
Antonio Conte’s side – who also did not have European football to contend with – were eliminated from the Coppa Italia against Lazio, the same fate that befell Allegri’s Milan last night.

The similarities are clear and expose Milan’s current difficulty, with a 19-man squad filled with youngsters, of competing on both fronts. Allegri’s hope, however, is to finish the season the same way Conte did last season.
After the full-time whistle last night, Allegri was questioned in his interview with Mediaset about whether he reads anything into the similarities.
Are you superstitious? Napoli also lost to Lazio in the Coppa Italia round of 16…
“No, I can feel the negative people immediately. It’s still a long way off… Do you know how many times Milan have won in Turin in the last twelve years? Just the year of COVID. We’ll face a very difficult match, let’s try to prepare well.”
