Cole Palmer injury update as Chelsea make 'four huge transfer decisions'

4 hours ago 3

Chelsea star Cole Palmer is not expected to undergo surgery on the groin injury that has kept him unavailable for the last four matches and he should be out for 'weeks and not months'.

Palmer, 23, has been nursing the issue for some time and missed two games before the first international break after pulling out during the warm-up against West Ham.

He returned to face Brentford in September and made an instant impact off the bench, scoring his first of the season. After starting and finding the net at Bayern Munich in the Champions League, it felt as though Palmer was about getting back to his best, up until he was substituted within the first quarter against Manchester United.

Enzo Maresca said post-match that Palmer was not 100 per cent fit and he has not featured since, missing the Carabao Cup tie at Lincoln City, the Champions League home fixture against Benfica and the Premier League double-header against Brighton and Liverpool.

Although there is some concern that Palmer has been getting a recurrence of the same groin problem, the Daily Mail reports that it has been decided his injury is not serious enough for him to go under the knife and that he should be out for a number of weeks, rather than months.

The exact timeline of Palmer's absence has not been revealed, though there is hope that he won't be out for the long term as Chelsea prepare for another chaotic period in the football calendar.

As well as coming to the conclusion that Palmer does not need surgery, Chelsea have been weighing up a number of other decisions. One of which is that the Blues won't go back in for goalkeeper Mike Maignan, after attempting to sign him from AC Milan in the summer, and are happy with Robert Sanchez.

Another is that Emanuel Emegha is set to remain at Chelsea next summer after an agreement was reached with sister club Strasbourg last month, and therefore won't go out on loan, while the January transfer window is anticipated to be a quiet one and the Blues won't make any moves.

The fourth and final decision that Chelsea have made is that Geovany Quenda won't join the club any earlier than next summer, after the Blues and Sporting CP came to an agreement back in March. The 18-year-old has made quite the impact in Portugal since breaking into the Sporting first team.

Chelsea are back in action after the international hiatus when they travel to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, October 18. The Blues then host Ajax in the Champions League before facing Sunderland at Stamford Bridge.
