AC Milan Women suffered a tough defeat against Como on Saturday evening, conceding a penalty in injury time after a lengthy VAR check.
After the win against the reigning champions last weekend, things were looking up for Suzanne Bakker and her players. However, instead of building on that momentum against Como, the Rossonere were left with a lot of disappointment.
The game could have gone differently, though, as Milan were awarded a penalty at the end of the first half. Como had created quite a few chances before that, and while it wasn’t completely against the run of play, it was definitely a change for the Rossonere to change the face of the game.
Evelyn Ijeh stepped up for the away side but instead of putting the ball into the back of the net, she fired it way over the crossbar. A big opportunity squandered, as such, and the scores remained level as the referee blew for half-time.
About 13 minutes into the second half, it was Como’s time to get a penalty. Thea Kyvåg lost the ball on the edge of the box and was forced to bring the opponent down, resulting in the penalty. However, just like Ijeh, Nadine Nischler missed as she hit the woodwork.
Milan thus remained in the game, and both teams had their chances to take the lead. The defining moment came in the 84th minute, when the Rossonere’s Milicia Keijzer was sent off for denial of a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
Initially, the referee deemed it to be a free-kick but after a lenghty VAR check, the decision was changed to a penalty. This time, Nischler made no mistakes and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, securing the three points for Como.
Milan failed to find an equaliser from there, and due to the defeat, Como leapfrogged them in the standings. The latter’s strong start to the season thus continued.
