CorSera: 27 commemorative plaques the new obstacle in Milan and Inter’s San Siro plan

It is no longer a surprise any more, but AC Milan and Inter have another potential obstacle to overcome in their new stadium hopes.

Recently, there were reports of further uncertainty about the ability of the Council to sell San Siro and the surrounding areas to the two clubs. This is despite the fact that an agreement was very close – if not complete – over the figure of €197m.

Plaques the latest hurdle

As Corriere della Sera (via MilanPress) reports today in its Milan edition, a set of 27 commemorative plaques located in the West Stand of the current San Siro stadium are designated a ‘public archive on display’ according to the Archive Superintendency.

The Cultural Heritage Code explains that ‘public archive’ has been there since its inception and cannot be destroyed (demolished) or dismembered (with the plaques affixed elsewhere) or alienated (as it is state property).

San Siro, Milan and Inter

What exactly are the plaques? The ‘queen’ plaque, the newspaper explains, dates back to March 2 1980, and bears the following inscription: “To Giuseppe Meazza / Expressed by his generous heart / the people of Milan / name / this glorious stadium / illuminated many times / by his exploits as an athlete.”

The signature certifying the ownership of the insignia is also included: “The municipal administration of Milan.” The 27 plaques are located between entrances 226 and 228, divided between 18 for AC Milan and 9 for Inter.

They represent every international triumph of the two clubs from the 1960s onwards: the first for the Rossoneri in the 1963 European Cup, the last for the Nerazzurri in the 2010 Club World Cup.
