AC Milan and Inter are currently preparing for Sunday’s Derby della Madonnina, but as highlighted by a report, there is a derby on the mercato that will go on for much longer.
As reported by today’s edition of Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews), an interesting in-game battle concerns Mike Maignan and Yann Sommer. Both keepers have expiring contracts and as things stand, they are likely to leave their respective clubs at the end of the season.
At 36 years old, the time has come for the Nerazzurri to move on from Sommer, while Milan have been struggling to reach a contract renewal agreement with Maignan. In short, once the summer rolls around and the months leading up to it, both clubs will be searching for a new goalkeeper.
Mercato derby beckons
The problem is that finding a goalkeeper with a reasonable price tag and wages is no easy task, especially if the player needs to be ready for a shirt as heavy as Milan or Inter’s. Subsequently, many of the same names are on the two clubs’ wish lists.
Some of the names that have been mentioned for both clubs are Elia Caprile of Cagliari, Sion Suziki of Parma, Noah Atubolu of Freiburg and Illan Meslier of Leeds United. Milan have also been linked with some other goalkeepers, but these are the targets they share with Inter.

For now, however, full focus is on tomorrow’s derby rather than a potential mercato battle down the line. The fact that Sommer and Maignan could make one of their last derby appearances is worth noting, though.
