AC Milan are currently on course to secure a Champions League return, and future squad planning is already underway.
This morning’s edition of Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) confirms that the management are already starting to think about the 2026-27 season. With a return to Europe likely, the goal will be to expand their squad numerically, as well as clearly increase its quality.
Furlani-Lotito talks
At least one reinforcement will need to arrive in defence, and the main name is Mario Gila. His contract with Lazio runs until 2027 and he is an old favourite of the Milan sporting director Igli Tare, who brought him to Italy.
Lazio president Claudio Lotito has been contacted by Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani to discuss the Spaniard’s move to the Rossoneri, one that is much more likely to go through in the summer rather than in the final week of the winter mercato.

For his part, Massimiliano Allegri wouldn’t mind having Gila right away, but the tenuous relationship between Maurizio Sarri and the Lazio club’s leader suggests there won’t be any other high-profile departures during this winter transfer window.
Milan and Lazio are negotiating a deal around €20m. It’s worth remembering that half of this sum will go to Real Madrid, who secured a 50% resale percentage in the deal they did with Lazio in summer 2022.
With his contract expiring at the end of next season and no renewal, Lazio will be almost ‘forced’ to sell the 25-year-old in the summer, otherwise they risk losing him for free a year later.
