With Luka Modric’s signing now officially over the line, more background information continues to emerge on the deal.
Modric became Milan’s second signing of the summer yesterday when he signed a contract until 2026 with an option for an extra year. He follows Samuele Ricci, who joined from Torino to kick start the midfield rebuild following the sale of Tijjani Reijnders.
Allegri and Ibrahimovic approve
According to Corriere della Sera (via MilanPress), the initial idea came from the new sporting director Igli Tare, who put forward Modric as a potential signing to the management shortly after his arrival.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the Senior Advisor to RedBird Capital and Milan, welcomed it with great enthusiasm. Massimiliano Allegri is also convinced regarding the wisdom of the move because of the experience and winning mentality Modric brings.
More specifically, Allegri is a firm believer that Milan need an example like Ibrahimovic, who rejoined the club in January 2020 and became a real reference figure for a young squad.
There are few players who boast was Modric has. He won 28 major trophies at Madrid, including six UEFA Champions Leagues, four La Liga titles, and two Copa del Rey titles. It makes him the most decorated player in the club’s history, which is remarkable given the stars they have had.
