AC Milan’s defensive record has drawn praise from the media this season as they continue to rack up clean sheets.
As Il Corriere dello Sport (seen below) reports this morning, the team with the best defence will most likely win the Scudetto. This is according to what the history of the league tells us, because in the last 18 years in Serie A, it has only happened once (in 2019-20, Maurizio Sarri’s Juventus) that the team without the best defence won the title.
Allegri’s work evident
Massimiliano Allegri has been talking about this aspect since the first day of his return to Milan and is reportedly instilling this diktat throughout the team. The Rossoneri are not the best in the league yet, given that Roma are leading the table with only two goals conceded.
However, Milan are right behind with three goals conceded in total, even considering the two Coppa Italia matches. The last goal conceded from open play dates back 47 days, a bicycle kick by Federico Bonazzoli in Milan’s 2-1 loss to Cremonese.

The newspaper takes a look at the specific statistics: the Rossoneri have conceded 9.3 total shots per game and are third in the Serie A standings. They’ conceded four against Cremonese, seven against Lecce, five against Bologna, ten against Udinese, 19 against Napoli and 12 against Juventus.
However, they’ve conceded limited shots on target: three against Cremonese, two against Lecce, zero against Bologna, four against Udinese, only three against Napoli and three against Juventus.
The Corriere concludes by talking about expected goals conceded , which results in a coefficient of 6.3 in six match days, the lowest in the entire Serie A. This figure – as well as the others – shows the improvement at the back.
