The weather forecasts suggest that there is a real chance of something very rare happening: a Milan derby played in the snow.
The atmosphere at San Siro on Sunday night will certainly be red hot on the pitch and in the stands, but from a weather perspective it will be anything but warm. In fact, it will be close to or even below freezing, which brings some interesting possibilities.
Corriere dello Sport report that – according to weather forecasts – it’s not a remote possibility that the derby could be played in the snow. Temperatures will approach freezing throughout the day as the 20:45 CET kick-off approaches.
The last time there was a ‘white derby’ was back on 24 February 2013. That time, the match ended 1-1 with goals from Stephan El Shaarawy and Ezequiel Schelotto. On that occasion, the city woke up covered in snow, but the flakes stopped falling a few hours before kick-off.
San Siro nevertheless offered a unique spectacle, with a perfectly clean pitch but the stands still framed in white. Twelve years later, history could repeat itself. The idea of an Inter-Milan match feels befitting of the first derby with the stadium entirely club-owned.
There should be no worries regarding the pitch, given it is equipped to deal with extreme weather and the winter cold of northern Italy.
