CorSport: Maignan’s future remains uncertain – renewal hope and the ‘gentlemen’s agreement’

AC Milan will make a final attempt to renew the contract of Mike Maignan, but they are already beginning to think about replacements.

As reported by Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) this morning, this current season appears to be Maignan’s last at Milan. The goalkeeper did not leave this summer despite Chelsea’s advances: €18m was deemed too little by the Rossoneri management to agree a sale.

The Frenchman was removed from the shop window at Massimiliano Allegri’s request. There is, it is said, a sort of gentlemen’s agreement between the club and the goalkeeper: he will give everything until June and then he will leave Milan on a free transfer.

Maignan’s contract expires in 2026, meaning this could well be his last campaign. Everyone is happy with the performances of the goalkeeper. The hope of continuing together is still there, and there will be another attempt to try extend his deal.

Chelsea were told no a few months ago, and in the next few months an attempt to secure a renewal for Maignan will be made. Milan are largely banking on Allegri’s possible influence, given the trust he has put in him.

If it doesn’t work out and the Rossoneri were forced to replace him, the first name on the list would be Elia Caprile of Cagliari. The other name is Zion Suzuki of Parma, as per the report.
