CorSport: Milan deal for Liverpool defender ‘could materialise very quickly’ – the reasons

AC Milan could sign a defender during the January window, and a player who was strongly linked in the summer remains a target.

As Corriere dello Sport (via PressReader) report this morning, Massimiliano Allegri has certainly helped stop the bleeding in the rearguard after last season’s awful record. Milan have conceded nine goals so far, but six came against Cremonese, Pisa and Parma, so there is room for improvement.

Further changes planned

The trio that Allegri has chosen to rely on is Fikayo Tomori, Matteo Gabbia and Strahinja Pavlovic. In the summer there were alterations as Malick Thiaw headed to Newcastle for €40m, and his place was taken by Koni De Winter, acquired from Genoa for €20m. Young talent David Odogu arrived for €10m too.

Before signing Odogu – who is considered more of a profile for the future – Igli Tare tried until the end of the summer transfer window to sign a more experienced central defender. Liverpool’s Joe Gomez was the man he went for, and the management are considering reopening talks with the Reds.

Negotiations with the Englishman were in full swing at the end of August, but Liverpool’s failure to acquire Marc Guehi had prompted Arne Slot to keep the Englishman. Since then though he has made just four substitute appearances in the Premier League in 11 games.

Gomez has only logged 238 minutes of playing time in three months of the season: not enough to consider staying around Anfield any longer. At Milan he could play as a centre-back, right-back or even right wing-back, and this time negotiations ‘could materialise very quickly’.
