CorSport: Milan seek Gomez deal but difficulties could arise – the two reasons why

2 hours ago 3

Interest in another central defender did not die down at the end of the window, and AC Milan tried for Joe Gomez. However, they were unsuccessful.

Manuel Akanji started the deadline weekend as the top priority, and after him (and Gomez), Milan signed youngster David Odogu. Of course, the German could come good, but there is a level between him and the other interests.

That, noticeably, is age and experience, which seems to be the core foundation of the new Rossoneri. Whilst the former Wolfsburg man stands out as an experienced option, with a high ceiling, a very RedBird move.

Issues with Gomez

With this, Massimiliano Allegri’s desire to add another senior defender to the team has not died, and Gomez remains an option, which has been the case since the summer mercato ended.

The Englishman, as Football Italia reports, has only played 29 minutes in the Premier League, sitting behind Virgil Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate. So, with the draw of first-team football, a move to Italy could be even more attractive.

As is relayed in the article, Corriere dello Sport also state that this could be a difference maker in negotiations, and if a formal approach occurs, Gomez could help push due to this factor.

However, Arne Slot will remain key to the deal, as will Giovanni Leoni’s recovery. If the Englishman leaves, the Reds would be low on cover, so they would have to consider themselves before allowing Gomez to leave.

Considering Leoni’s injury, it may be time to look at other options, too.
