Inter head coach Cristian Chivu has an important selection dilemma to resolve in view of the derby against AC Milan, a report claims.
According to Corriere dello Sport (via MilanPress), there is a three-way battle to occupy the middle centre-back role in the three-man defence. Acerbi, De Vrij and Bisseck are all candidates for starting positions.
After the recent break and Chivu’s decision to reshuffle the defensive hierarchy, the choice of who will lead the defence is far from clear. The trio were not called up by their national teams and are therefore in the same physical condition, but with very different characteristics.
Containing Leao
This is a crucial detail, considering Leao is the main opponent to contain. Against Milan, the Nerazzurri will have to keep a watchful eye on the Portuguese, who doesn’t operate like a traditional centre-forward.
Instead he roams, attacks spaces and moves all over the forward line, especially when playing alongside Christian Pulisic. This is precisely why they need a defender who is quick, responsive, and capable of holding one-on-one situations even in open play.
It’s possible that Milan will opt for a more counter-attacking stance in the derby, aiming to hit Inter in transition, like against Roma when Leao got the assist. This will force the Nerazzurri to maintain close focus in defence.
Chivu’s team favour an aggressive set-up: high pressing and immediate ball recovery. However, such an attacking approach can create vulnerabilities when facing a fast and unpredictable player like Leao. Choosing between Acerbi, De Vrij and Bisseck is Chivu’s main dilemma.
