Cristian Romero has insisted he never wanted to leave Tottenham amid constant rumours linking the defender with a summer exit.
The 27-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid this summer and it was uncertain whether the centre-back would be playing his football at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the 2025/26 season. With Ange Postecoglou departing after the Europa League success in May, Thomas Frank was appointed and one of the Dane's biggest priorities was ensuring the Argentina defender stayed put.
In the end, Romero signed a new four-year deal with the club and was appointed captain by Frank. Speaking ahead of Tottenham's Champions League clash with Villareal, Romero admitted he is "very happy" at Spurs.
The World Cup winner said: "I never said I wanted to leave the club. Nothing came from me in that effect. It is important what the manager and president say. I am very happy here, it is like a family. I like the manager. I like the way we work, the way we train. Always things can improve but I think everyone here at all levels are taking the right steps to improve. I am very happy here."
He added: "I’m very happy here. It’s a family, one big family. I'm very happy since Thomas has arrived. He took a decision to extend my contract. I like the manager that has arrived, the way that we are working together. Always things can improve and that’s what we have to do day-to-day. I’m very happy here and that’s the key."
This is a breaking story. More as we get it...
