Leeds United boss Daniel Farke admitted his side had to be “stubborn” in order to claim a hard-fought point against Liverpool at Anfield.

The Reds began 2026 in disappointing fashion as they were held to a draw for the second time in just under a month by Leeds. Virgil van Dijk and Hugo Ekitike both went close to scoring for the hosts, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a strike disallowed for the visitors as it ended goalless.

Ekitike also felt he should have been awarded a penalty after being held back by Jaka Bijol during the first half, but Liverpool ultimately didn’t do enough to claim all three points.

It’s a big opportunity missed for the Reds, who failed to capitalize on Chelsea and Manchester United dropping points earlier this week in the race for the top four.

Leeds, though, were clearly delighted with taking a second point off the reigning Premier League champions this season, with Farke hailing his side’s efforts after the game.

"It was the reigning champions back in their top shape,” Farke told Sky Sports. “Also, you could feel the New Year's Day special atmosphere in the stadium.

Leeds fought hard to earn a draw against Liverpool

"They were on it, and we needed to show lots of resilience, stubborn and structured.

"We had a good start to this game, but of course, there was many periods we had to suffer and we had to dig in. Liverpool had lots of possession, shots as well, but not clear-cut chances.

"I am very happy with the clean sheet and the point and the mentality the lads showed today. A great point and a really good evening for us.

"Six minutes of added time I didn't see where that was coming from! Then the game was over, and not many freekicks to us were given. Some yellow cards, I am asking why I am missing key player Ethan Ampadu in the next game.

"The atmosphere in the dressing room at the minute is second to none. We were rock solid as a team and stuck together. A lot of praise goes to my team and the lads."

Liverpool will hope it can return to winning ways when it travels to Fulham on Sunday, with a huge game at Arsenal following soon after on January 8.
