Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi is not thinking much about the upcoming Milan derby, because he has his own match to prepare for.
De Zerbi is someone who was born and raised in Brescia but became attached to Milan in his younger years, given that he was a part of the youth system from 1995 before leaving the club seven years later, having failed to crack the first team.
Though he has often been linked with a return as head coach, the Italian is currently plying his trade at Marseille in Ligue 1. They have made a good start to the season with eight league wins in 12 games, and they look like the team that will push PSG closest again in the title race.
De Zerbi spoke to MilanNews while arriving for the presentation of Giorgio Perinetti’s book last night, and naturally he was asked about the derby as well as the state of Serie A and the national team.
How are your team Marseille doing at the moment?
“The team is strong, and it’s clear that we’re struggling with injuries like many other teams. The schedule is crazy, packed, crazy, so we’re also subject to fluctuations in performance, but this is modern football, we have to move forward.
“We’re doing well, it’s clear that PSG is still ahead of everyone because they remain strong, but we’re trying to gain even more ground than last year.”

As a coach, what kind of period is this for the national team?
“A difficult period, but that’s what reality tells us. These aren’t opinions, just facts. However, right now, the important thing is not understanding the whys, the hows, or future plans. We just need to go to the World Cup.”
Is Gattuso the right man?
“Gattuso is absolutely right. There’s no better coach for Italy than him.”
What derby do you see on the horizon?
“I have another derby against Nice on Friday, so it’s hard to talk about that.”
Who is the Scudetto favourite?
“I don’t know, it’s hard to say, especially because it’s a very even league.”
