Di Marzio: Milan ‘evaluating opportunities’ ahead of January – Napoli striker one to watch

Gianluca Di Marzio believes that AC Milan could make a move for a striker in January, but a departure is needed first.

With Milan top of the league after 14 games, the January mercato could be an opportunity to strengthen various areas and really begin to cultivate a title push. However, the notion of spending big appears to be out of the window.

One of the big doubts surrounding Milan at the moment concerns the attack. Both Santiago Gimenez and Christopher Nkunku are without a league goal despite costing €31m and €38m respectively, leading to them already being linked with an exit.

Gimenez out, Lucca in?

Di Marzio spoke live on Sky during the coverage of Milan’s 3-2 comeback win against Torino on Monday night and he shed some light on the striker issue, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“Milan remain a team that’s looking around, and as always, evaluating opportunities and various situations. The January transfer window may not take off, depending on many factors, but we know how things can change quickly,” he said.

“The talk of a starting striker is still hot, and that includes Santiago Gimenez. As of now, the arrival of another striker at Milan would depend on the Mexican’s departure in the event of a transfer.”

In an article on his website, Di Marzio adds: “With a squad halved due to injuries, Napoli is waiting for the transfer market to strengthen it. In order to be able to focus on a new midfielder, the club first needs to think about some exits.

“The name would be that of Lorenzo Lucca (the formula, given the large summer investment, would be that of a loan). The striker is being followed in Italy, especially by Milan (if Gimenez leaves) and Roma.”
