AC Milan are pushing to secure Manuel Akanji from Manchester City, but as the negotiations are somewhat difficult, they have also eyed a couple of alternatives.
The switch to the 3-5-2 formation, which Igli Tare admitted has put them in difficulty, has resulted in a centre-back pursuit in recent days. Manchester City’s Akanji has been identified as the primary target and the Rossoneri just need to reach an agreement with the player.
However, the negotiations are difficult and it’s not certain that Milan will be able to convince the 30-year-old. With little time remaining of the transfer window (it closes on Monday evening), the Rossoneri thus have some alternatives as well.
Two alternatives indentified
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, reporting late last night, Milan have added Villarreal’s Juan Foyth to their list. The 27-year-old has been at the club since 2020, when he joined from Tottenham, and thus has quite a lot of experience.

This morning, Di Marzio added that Milan are also keeping tabs on Liverpool’s Joe Gomez for the centre-back role. The 28-year-old is not a starter for the Reds and could perhaps be allowed to leave in these final days of the mercato.
Then again, Akanji is the main target and the Rossoneri will try until the very end to receive his go-ahead, having already reached an agreement with Man City.
