Diogo Jota shared poignant verdict on final Liverpool goal before tragic death

1 day ago 45

Diogo Jota revealed that his life's work reached its pinnacle when he netted his final - and arguably most crucial - Liverpool goal. The decisive strike against Everton, which edged the Reds nearer to Premier League glory in April, represented the last time Jota found the back of the net for the club before his tragic passing.

In footage captured shortly before his death in July, the Portuguese star explained the importance of that moment during a campaign hampered by injury setbacks.

The Liverpool legend tragically lost his life in a car accident alongside his brother last month whilst travelling back to the United Kingdom from Spain.

Jota's final interview with the Merseyside outfit has now been featured as part of Liverpool's documentary chronicling their championship-winning season, Champions 24-25: The Inside Story.

The program was dedicated to the striker, who provided commentary throughout the season alongside the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Alexis Mac Allister amongst others.

In an emotional tribute, Jota outlined what finding the net against Everton signified to him during Liverpool's title charge. Especially following a challenging campaign, despite the squad's excellent form.

"It was a very tough season for me but I was always there fighting and I could help the team that day and I'm proud of what I could still do," he said.

"It's hard to describe. That's the feeling I look for when I play football, that's why you put all your life and all your efforts to moments like that, moments where you can decide an important game.

"As a striker the best way is to score a goal, it is worth it to keep going and searching for moments like that. You just feel amazing. I could help the team that day and we just built on the momentum from there. In the end you can say that was a decisive week."

Jota secured his first Premier League title, adding to his Carabao Cup and FA Cup victories with Liverpool. It's an accomplishment he couldn't have fathomed as a youngster.

"It is something I could not even dream as a kid, I wanted to play in the Premier League but I could never imagine to win it," he reflected.

The documentary concludes with Jota musing over the ensuing celebrations, which clearly held deep significance for him.

"Pictures that will be shown forever," Jota remarked. "It is a remarkable achievement for a small guy that came from Gondomar, where I had this dream. Finally we did it. But it is a moment I will cherish forever like I said because it's a remarkable achievement."
