Liverpool's good relationship with RB Leipzig looks likely to play a key role in the Reds' chances of signing Yan Diomande this summer.

The Reds have seemingly earmarked Diomande as their preferred replacement for Mohamed Salah, who will leave Anfield at the end of the season.

Diomande, 19, joined Leipzig last summer and is enjoying a breakout season, having already registered 12 goals and eight assists in the Bundesliga this term. Football Insider reports that Diomande is keen on a move to Anfield, and that the positive relationship between Liverpool and Leipzig boosts the chances of a deal being done.

Liverpool signed both Dominik Szoboszlai and Ibrahima Konate from the German club previously, and there is also the Jurgen Klopp link between the two clubs to consider.

Klopp managed Liverpool for nine years before leaving Merseyside in 2024, and last year he started in a new role as Red Bull's Global Head of Soccer. Leipzig reportedly wants a fee in the region of €100 million ($117 million) for Diomande.

It is not yet clear whether Liverpool intends to press ahead with what would be a very expensive deal, but the Reds are doing their due diligence as they go about the unenviable task of attempting to replace Salah.

However, former Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, who still works for Red Bull, said that he hopes Diomande stays at Leipzig beyond the summer.

"I can say: If I were sporting director, I wouldn't sell this young player, who hasn't even completed a full season with us,” Mintzlaff said.

“No matter what price is being asked. I believe he's a player who can still develop further, because he's still very young. And he can certainly become more expensive."

“Of course, there are other clubs where players also want to take the next step – FC Bayern is one of them, but also clubs from England and Spain,” Mintzlaff added..

“But we have to expect that a player, even if he delivers outstanding performances here, doesn't leave again after just one year.

“Therefore, I can only recommend to the management that they keep this player with us for the coming season. And then we'll have to see how he develops.”
