Dominik Szoboszlai was left in tears as his Hungary side suffered a dramatic defeat to the Republic of Ireland, ending their World Cup hopes.
The Liverpool midfielder had looked to have guided his nation to a play-off spot as they desperately tried to cling on to a draw during the final moments in Budapest, but Troy Parrott completed a sensational hat-trick in stoppage time to steal second place in Group F away.
It means, having also not secured a play-off place via the Nations League, Szoboszlai and his Liverpool teammate Milos Kerkez will not be heading to next year’s tournament.
Television cameras picked up Szoboszlai looking distraught straight after Parrott’s late winner, while the 25-year-old was seen in tears as he acknowledged supporters.
