Dominik Szoboszlai says Liverpool must respond to its defeat in the Champions League earlier this week with a positive result against Tottenham in the race for the top five spots.

By the time the Reds kick off at Anfield, Chelsea will have played Newcastle and Manchester United will have faced Aston Villa. At least one of the sides around Liverpool will therefore have dropped points.

With only nine games remaining for Liverpool to ensure that it is playing Champions League soccer next term, the Reds don't have much in the way of a margin for error — and Szoboszlai is expecting a response.

"I was pretty angry after the game because of the result but not only about that," Szoboszlai told the Reds' official website. "Because I feel that we didn't play in a way like we should and we can.

"Because we showed it so many times that we are able to win against any team actually or compete against any team in the league or in European football.

"We have to really focus on the upcoming games because now it's Tottenham on Sunday and next week on Wednesday is going to be a big game — I can't wait for it."

While Liverpool needs the points at the top end of the table, Tottenham is in a desperate situation at the bottom of the standings. Spurs are only one point above the drop zone heading into the weekend.

"To be honest, I'm not thinking about them," Szoboszlai continued. "I'm thinking about us because also we have some things to fight for.

"We want to play next year in the Champions League, so there is a spot to go for. But first of all, we have to focus on ourselves and do the right stuff, do the right things and then everything is going to be all right."

Arne Slot's side has the ideal chance to get back on track with a home game against struggling Tottenham. But the Dutchman has admitted that this season has far from gone to plan.

"I think the bar at Liverpool is always high," Slot said on Friday. "It has always been high and will always be high. And that’s only a good thing. We’re a top club, where the bar should be set high by the people around us, but we will set the bar just as high.

"Yeah, indeed, last season where we were able to achieve one of the things we wanted to achieve and that was winning a league, close to winning the League Cup, which we lost in the final against Newcastle.

"This season of course we’re unable to win the league again, but we’re still in two cups, Champions League and the FA Cup, where we are competing."

Liverpool.com says: Against Spurs, the Reds simply have to win. Having lost to another relegation candidate in Wolves recently, nothing can be taken for granted — but anything but three points would be a huge upset.
