Dominik Szoboszlai makes emphatic Liverpool statement as Reds prepare for Frankfurt

1 week ago 32

Dominik Szoboszlai has emphatically declared Liverpool’s downturn in form “will turn”.

Sunday’s defeat against Manchester United was the Reds’ fourth in a row, the club’s worst sequence in 11 years. It’s a particularly surprising run given Liverpool, the reigning Premier League champions, strengthened so heavily in the summer transfer window.

Yet despite the high-profile and costly arrivals of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, and others, Liverpool has yet to put in a convincing performance so far this season. Szoboszlai is among the club’s more consistent stars and said ahead of the Champions League encounter against Eintracht Frankfurt that he is confident things will improve soon.

“This will turn,” he declared in an interview with Liverpool’s club website. “If you work hard, you keep going, the luck will go on your side.

“I think [it] never happened in my career but [also in] a lot of guys' careers that we lost four times in a row,” the Hungary captain continued.

“So, now we have to stick together, that's most important. We had a lot of meetings, we spoke with each other, but the most important [thing] is that we stay together.

Szoboszlai has been among Liverpool's best performers this season

“In a good time it's easy to stay together, but it's the most important thing when it comes to a hard time, how we stay together. I think for Wednesday we are ready to show a reaction and that's what we are going to do.”

With Ryan Gravenberch injured, Szoboszlai could play a greater defensive role on Wednesday.

His versatility has proved invaluable for Arne Slot this season, who has deployed the 24-year-old at right back and as both a defensive and attacking midfielder.

His importance is underlined by the fact that Szoboszlai has played every minute of Liverpool’s league and European matches this term, something only Virgil van Dijk can also boast.

His input will be vital on Wednesday as Liverpool seeks to avoid another defeat and a first run of five straight losses since 1953.

“The most important [thing] is that I think we have to show again the character what we have, what Liverpool can do and what we are able to do,” said the Reds’ no.8.

“We showed it last season, becoming champions with many points, to be honest. Now everybody is ready for us – but that's a good thing, you have to take it as a positivity and just be ready for them.”
