Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai has sent an emotional message to Hungary's fans in the wake of Sunday's dramatic 3-2 defeat to the Republic of Ireland.
The 25-year-old was reduced to tears as Hungary's chances of World Cup qualification disappeared in front of his eyes in Budapest, despite leading 2-1 heading into the final 10 minutes. A draw would have been enough for the Hungarians to advance to a World Cup play-off, but a remarkable Ireland fightback prevented that from happening.
A goal from Troy Parrott in the sixth minute of injury-time saw the visitors snatch a 3-2 victory, making the AZ Alkmaar frontman a new national hero in Ireland. For Szoboszlai, Milos Kerkez, and his Hungary teammates, it was heartbreak, however.
As national team captain, Liverpool's No. 8 was particularly emotional at the full-time whistle and, 24 hours, released a statement on social media summing up his feelings.
"It hurts," Szobszlai began his Instagram post.
"It hurts because we really wanted it! Not only for us but for you too. For you, who are always by our side and would accompany us to the end of the world.
"As team captain, I'm sorry I didn't make it this time... Very proud of all players, staff and coaches.
"I love being Hungarian, even when life tests me. Some day every detail will fall into place, that's why we work again and again. You are, what is mine.
"We owe you and us a World Cup! The work has begun again. I love you Hungary."
Szoboszlai recently became the youngest Hungarian ever to reach 60 caps, a landmark he achieved in last week's win over Armenia.
He played every minute of his country's six World Cup qualifiers, providing four assists and a goal.
Given Hungary missed out on qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, the former RB Leipzig man only have one more opportunity to play at soccer's pinnacle.
Szoboszlai has captained Hungary for the last three years, and has not missed an international game since November 2021.
At club level, he has also become a hugely valued member of Arne Slot's Liverpool team. He has started 16 matches this term, only sitting out the two Carabao Cup matches.
Along with Virgil van Dijk, Szoboszlai is the only Liverpool player to feature in every minute of the team's 11 Premier League fixtures this campaign.
