Donadoni gives opinion on Milan title challenge, Leao issue and Allegri’s impact

Roberto Donadoni believes that Massimiliano Allegri has created a ‘united’ AC Milan, but fired a warning to Rafael Leao.

Milan have certainly made a positive start to the new campaign, winning six of their eight games across all competitions including four of six in the league. They did relinquish top spot after a draw with Juventus, but remain within striking distance of Roma and Napoli who are the top two.

Despite this, there is still a lot of noise that surrounds the team, especially after Rafael Leao missed two big chances to keep Milan top in the 0-0 draw against Juve and was apparently reprimanded in the dressing room for his attitude by Allegri.

Donadoni gave an interview to Tuttosport in which he discussed the start to the season that Milan have had and how a couple of individuals are getting on, with his comments via MilanPress.

How do Milan look so far?

“Milan look good. Perhaps a little less so in the last match against Juventus, where the performance wasn’t up to par with the others. But it’s clear that when the stakes are high, winning becomes more complicated.

“However, I’d say the start is excellent and gives us hope. Allegri certainly deserves some credit. It’s clear that creating a cohesive and united group isn’t easy, and I think that was Milan’s main difficulty last year.

“This year it seems that this problem has been overcome, and we see a different team on the pitch. Is it a team worthy of the Scudetto? From what I’ve seen so far, I’d say yes.”

Luka Modric continues to play at a high level…

“Considering his age, his ability to put himself at the service of the team with such dynamism is astonishing. I hope he can play with this intensity as much as possible because it certainly adds value not only for what he can do on the pitch, but also for the example he sets for all his teammates every day.”

Leao, on the other hand, is struggling a bit…

“If he doesn’t comply, he risks self-exclusion. He ‘s a player with great potential, but if he doesn’t adapt to the spirit of the rest of the team, he risks excluding himself.

“I hope for him and for Milan that there’s no risk because he’s a player with great ability and can therefore be of great help. As a centre forward? I think it’ll be difficult… ”

How much influence can Allegri have?

“It’s clear that the relationship between coach and player has its own specific weight, but first of all, the player must realise what is necessary for him. If you’re not focused on yourself properly, it clearly becomes a way of excluding yourself from the project.

“I believe this is the message that Allegri wants to convey to him because Max has everything to gain from trying to bring out the best in a player like that. If he succeeds, then we will see the best Leao in a Milan shirt again.”
