Emerson Royal recently completed a move to Flamengo from AC Milan, and he has shed some light on the decision.
It is just over one year ago since Emerson joined Milan from Spurs on a long-term deal. However, his time with the Rossoneri never really got going and by the winter mercato there was already a lot of speculation about him departing the club.
After recovering from an injury that kept him out for months, the Brazilian’s fate was again uncertain as the window reopened. Besiktas were expected to sign him, then right at the last minute Flamengo swooped to secure a permanent deal.
‘Exactly the opposite’
Emerson Royal spoke during his official unveiling press conference and he spoke about why he decided to leave Europe to return to his homeland. His comments were relayed by MilanPress.
“I had offers to stay in Europe. They told me that returning to Brazil would be a step backwards, but it’s exactly the opposite. Flamengo is a huge team, one of the biggest in the world, and we know their impact on the world stage. Wherever I’ve been, everyone knows Flamengo inside out.
“Filipe Luis? He was also a full-back and can help me; he’s already explained what he expects from me. He told me I can dribble and always go after the man.”
