England's 50-man longlist for World Cup squad contains just one Liverpool player

Thomas Tuchel has drawn up an extensive list of 50 potential players for call-ups - but it includes just one current Liverpool player.

In the coming weeks, the England manager is expected to be busy contacting these players as he plans to visit, FaceTime, and Zoom with those hoping to make the World Cup squad.

Among the notable names is Brighton's young talent Jack Hinshelwood, whose ability to play both left back and midfield has caught the attention of Tuchel and his team. His Brighton colleague Danny Welbeck is another one to keep an eye on, having narrowly missed out on the latest camp, but is currently in good form and known to be a great team player.

However, there are likely to be some high-profile omissions, with Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold facing a race against time and odds to secure their spots.

Chelsea's star Palmer was outstanding at last year's Euros and shone at the Club World Cup, establishing himself as one of the world's top young talents. However, Palmer has been plagued by injuries this season - partly due to not having a break because of the Club World Cup - and faces stiff competition for the No. 10 role.

Morgan Rogers and Jude Bellingham are currently leading contenders, while Phil Foden's ability to also play as a false nine gives him an advantage. This could also benefit Eberechi Eze, who can play both centrally and on the wide left. But all of this spells concern for Palmer, who risks being the biggest casualty unless he can regain his top form and fitness for the second half of the season.

Tuchel's preference for in-person meetings with players, where he can see the whites of their eyes, is indicative of his desire to gauge their commitment to the England squad. Trent Alexander-Arnold remains a puzzle at the national level, with some speculating that his focus might be on thriving at Real Madrid following a challenging start marred by injury.

While sidelined at Arsenal, Ben White's chances of rejoining the squad seem slim. Similarly, Myles Lewis-Skelly risks being overtaken by Nico O'Reilly, and Djed Spence didn't feature in either of November's internationals.

Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire appear to have fallen out of favour with Tuchel. Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice are certainties, while Tuchel also has his sights set on Jordan Henderson, leaving perhaps one spot up for grabs for Adam Wharton and others.

Dan Burn is a sure bet, thanks to his height advantage during set-pieces and his positive influence off the pitch. Bukayo Saka is set to start, but Noni Madueke is highly regarded, with Jarrod Bowen hot on his heels. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon lead the pack ahead of Eze, as Tuchel plans to bring two wingers for each side in what will likely be a 26-man squad next summer.

There's likely room for one more striker alongside Harry Kane, and currently, that spot is anyone's game. Despite being the hero of the Euros, Ollie Watkins still has work to do. Tuchel has a plethora of decisions to make - in every sense.

However, the extensive list provides players with hope. England has just two friendlies in March - likely against Uruguay and Japan - before Tuchel faces the most challenging decision of all: naming his squad. A host of nervous stars will be awaiting a call from Tuchel.

Here is the list of 50 players, accompanied by their chances of getting picked in brackets...
