Santiago Gimenez will hope to represent Mexico at the World Cup next summer, and the AC Milan striker may be able to.
There has been a lot said about Gimenez’s injury recently, and more specifically, the severity of it. After all, the initial suggestions were that he would miss a few weeks. Instead, he has missed almost two months.
This morning, it was reported that he has decided to proceed with surgery, which will keep him out for another two months. A ‘how did we get here’-type situation, really.
Gimenez’s focus
As ESPN reports, the surgery could even keep him out for up to three months, despite suggestions that it would be eight weeks at a maximum. So, we shall have to see what the case is there. However, there is a goal in mind for the Mexican, as MilanNews relays.
His focus is firmly on the World Cup, and this is being repeated by the director of the national team.
“We spoke with the doctor yesterday: a thorough evaluation will be carried out today and tomorrow to decide how to proceed. We must understand that the players belong to the clubs, not the national team, and the decision is up to the clubs.

“Whatever decision is made, it will be in time for the World Cup. What I said is what I know at the moment. We’ll have more information this week. We know he’s having pain in his ankle and that a more thorough examination will be performed today to determine the next steps.
“He needs to stay calm and confident; he knows he can count on us for anything. Right now, there’s still time to choose the best treatment and be ready for the World Cup.”
Given that he will consider a move away in January, it will be interesting to see how the next few months go. However, unless a miracle occurs, it seems that the Milan adventure may be over, whether he leaves in January or not.
