Estupinan discusses Leao excitement, joining ‘dream’ club and delivers message

AC Milan finalised the signing of Pervis Estupinan this morning, announcing that the Ecuadorian full-back had signed a five year deal.

There is a lot to be excited for with Estupinan. A well-versed defender who can bring balance to the team, and more importantly the left-side. Above all, it is a sign that there is some desire in Milan. They found a target and moved for him quickly.

Of course, worries can be had with his injury record in recent years. However, the opportunity was too good to turn down at the price point, and the Rossoneri now have their Theo Hernandez replacement.

Estupinan’s first words

This afternoon, he sat down with MilanTV to discuss the move, the importance of being the first Ecuadorian to play for the Diavolo and his goals. His words have been relayed by MilanNews.

Tell us about your emotions over the last few hours. What’s going through your head?

“The truth is, I’m very happy and excited because a dream I’ve had since I was a child has come true: to play for such a great team. Now that my dream has come true, I’m very happy and very satisfied. I think all my hard work has paid off, and now I can’t wait to get started and do things right.”

What did you think when you heard about AC Milan’s interest? What does it mean?

“The first time my agent told me Milan was interested in me, I told him it seemed like a good idea because they’re a really big team. I think it’s not just me saying this; everyone knows how big Milan is. When they think of you and you get an offer from Milan, you immediately want to listen carefully. I’m really happy and I’m really eager to get started.”

You’ll play on Leao’s wing: what do you think of Rafa? How do you imagine the connection?

“I’m happy to play alongside a top-class player like Rafa Leao: I’ve always watched him. I’ll definitely learn a lot from him, and I’ll try to help him in my own small way to strengthen the left flank.”

Did you speak to De Zerbi before coming to Milan?

“I haven’t had the chance to speak to him, but at Brighton, when he coached me, he always spoke highly of Serie A. He told us how passionate the fans are about football, something that reminded him of South America. As a South American, it’s something that fills you with pride: now I’m here and I can experience all this.”

You’re the first Ecuadorian player in AC Milan’s history…

“I’m very happy to be able to continue making history. For me, it’s a huge step; it’s a truly fantastic opportunity to sign for this great club. And for my country, it’s obviously great news: many people support AC Milan in my country, and this is the first time an Ecuadorian has played for AC Milan. It’s incredible, and I’ve received many messages from many compatriots who also live in Italy or Milan. I’m proud to be part of this history: the only thing I want is to do things well to uphold the name of my country.”

How would you describe your personality? How can you help the team with your attitude?

“I’m a person who always wants to win. Milan is a great club because they’ve always won important trophies and always had a winning mentality. That’s why I came to Milan: I want to grow, I want to win titles and many other things with the club. I like winning, working hard, and I can give a lot to the team with my work, my experiences, and what I’ve learned. That’s how I can help the club achieve important goals.”

What do you expect from Serie A and Italy?

“It’s a dream come true. I’m joining a very big club like AC Milan, and I expect to win a lot, be happy, and make the fans happy. I’m really looking forward to starting working with the team. I promise I’ll give my all and work hard to make the fans happy. Italian food? I really like pasta.”

The message to the fans :

“Hi everyone, I’m Pervis Estupinan. I’m here to achieve great things with you. I know how great this club is, and that’s why I came here to win and celebrate together. I can’t wait to get started, and I’ll see you soon at San Siro. Forza Milan!”

Of course, words mean little compared to actions, but if he can deliver what he hopes to. Milan may have made a fantastic move.
