Ex-Liverpool boss will never forget Jamie Carragher's comment after being fired

Roy Hodgson has revealed he will never forget the words Jamie Carragher shared with him following his dismissal as Liverpool manager in January 2011.

Hodgson took charge at Anfield during the summer of 2010, with expectations that he would provide stability and guide the Reds back towards the top of the Premier League following a seventh-placed finish under Rafael Benitez, which had resulted in the Spaniard's exit amid ownership turmoil.

Yet, from the outset, a succession of errors saw Hodgson preside over a troubled spell in charge. Liverpool secured victory in only 13 of his 31 matches across all competitions, with the club languishing in the Premier League relegation zone for several weeks.

The Reds managed just one victory in Hodgson's opening eight Premier League fixtures, suffering defeats at Old Trafford and Goodison Park, as well as at home against Blackpool.

While they did make progress in the Europa League, where six of Hodgson's 13 victories came, they also suffered an embarrassing home defeat to Northampton Town in the League Cup.

One of the most disappointing managerial tenures in Liverpool's history came to an end following a 3-1 defeat at Blackburn in early January 2011.

Hodgson has now recalled what former Reds vice-captain Carragher told him after the announcement.

"I always remember what Carragher said to me when I was leaving," Hodgson revealed on The Managers podcast when interviewed by Mick McCarthy and Tony Pulis.

"He came in, he and Steven had come in to say goodbye and wish me luck and wish me well.

"And Carragher said, 'I've got to say, the big mistake you made was trying to coach us.'

"He said, 'You know, we’ve had four years of coaching. Probably the mistake you made, you’ve come in and you’ve prolonged that. You’ve also wanted to put us right on the field.'"

Hodgson chose not to expand on Carragher's remarks, with the now 78-year-old subsequently taking charge of West Brom before a four-year stint with England that included a group stage departure at the 2014 World Cup and a last-16 defeat to Iceland at Euro 2016.

Hodgson also guided England to the quarterfinals of Euro 2012, where the Three Lions lost on penalties to Italy.

He concluded his managerial career with two separate stints at Crystal Palace, with a short spell at Watford in between.
