Former Liverpool and Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll is facing a potential prison sentence after being charged with breaching a non-molestation order. The 36-year-old is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

Legal restrictions prevent the disclosure of case specifics. The BBC reports that the ex-England international was arrested in April, with the alleged breach said to have occurred a month prior.

Reports emerged in July of an unnamed former Premier League footballer being detained at an airport in full view of fellow passengers upon arriving in the UK. Now that charges have been filed and police have identified him, it can be confirmed that the individual was Andy Carroll.

He was apprehended shortly after disembarking from a flight at Stansted, having travelled from France. Essex Police confirmed this week: "A man has been charged with breaching a non-molestation order.

"Andrew Carroll, 36, of Epping, was arrested on April 27 and the alleged offences relate to an incident in March. He is due to appear at Chelmsford magistrates' court on December 30," reports the Mirror.

A non-molestation order represents a civil court injunction, typically designed to prohibit someone from approaching, contacting, or being near another person, their residence, or both.

Those who violate such orders, depending upon the circumstances, may face criminal proceedings that could result in imprisonment for up to five years.

Carroll has experienced a turbulent footballing journey since breaking through at Newcastle before Liverpool splashed out around £35 million ($47M) for his signature in 2011. The transfer proved unsuccessful as he managed just 11 goals in 58 outings before departing for West Ham.

He subsequently dropped down the leagues with West Brom and Reading in the Championship before making the switch to French second-tier outfit Amiens.

Carroll remained there for just over a campaign before joining Bordeaux following their demotion to the fourth division. He made an immediate impact during his short stint with the club, finding the net 11 times across 23 matches last season.

He presently turns out for Dagenham and Redbridge in the National League South. Carroll linked up with them in July on a free transfer after departing Bordeaux earlier in the summer, penning a three-year contract.
