Watch: Motherwell 2-0 Aberdeen highlights

27/09/2025

Bottom of the Scottish Premiership with one point from six games, without a single league goal in 674 minutes of league action this season, and no league wins in 10 stretching back to last season.

One win in 10 games overall this campaign - that coming against second-tier Greenock Morton in the Premier Sports Cup. Five defeats in the seven games since.

It is little wonder that the pressure on Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin from the club's fans continues to mount.

However, it looked like his side might leave Fir Park with a point until a horrendous goalkeeping error and a penalty kick, both in stoppage time, handed Motherwell their own first league win of the season on Saturday.

So where does the latest defeat leave the Dons' Swedish manager in the eyes of pundits, fans and the man himself?

Miller and Thelin see positive signs

Former Aberdeen captain and manager Willie Miller was seeking the positives.

"I'm sure Jimmy Thelin will be in a situation where Aberdeen fans are not pleased with the result tonight, but it wasn't just a better performance, it was much better," he told BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound.

"Aberdeen in the first half created a number of chances but didn't take them. Over the course of the 90 minutes, if you take away the two goals at the end, it's a very even game.

"If this type of performance had been earlier in the season, you'd be hopeful it would turn round. It's cruel for Aberdeen."

Thelin admitted that his side had not "performed well enough to deserve results" previously.

"But today the performance was much better," he told BBC Scotland. "The energy was there, the players were fighting in duels.

"I hope the fans feel the connection with the team again. We tried, we had some good chances at the beginning and end of the game, but we need to find the last pass to find that goal."

Thelin believes "to have not scored a goal is quite incredible" considering the chances they have had this season.

"Sometimes you need luck to get out of this - today we didn't have any luck," he said.

"Sometimes it's not easy to be positive when you're on this run, but you have to believe and we have to build on this performance now."

Little fan faith in Thelin - or Cormack

Despite Thelin insisting it is still early in the season and they can quickly catch the sides above should they start winning, it appears that all the credit he gained from lifting the Scottish Cup at the end of last season has disappeared, although the fans also blame chairman Dave Cormack.

Paul: "I'm a big believer in that we've hit rock bottom." Jimmy Thelin after defeat by Dundee United. Where now, Jimmy?

Stewart: Jimmy Thelin needs to go along with Dave Cormack.

Boris: If Thelin still is Aberdeen manager on Monday then it could be suggested that Cormack is clearly wanting us to compete in the Championship as five wins in 33 games is the form of a team dive bombing to relegation.

Kevin: The problem is not at manager level. Look at who Dave the ego has sacked and what they have achieved since.

Stuart: Better from Aberdeen, but still not good enough.

George: Thelin, it's time to go and take Cormack with you. Managers have been sacked for less.

Scott: Aberdeen throwing that away, chance to win it, just shoot, then a horror goal to concede. I know its done, but that penalty - ref and VAR - I'm not sure they've got that right.

Martin: A team like Aberdeen to be rock bottom of the league, no goals, I think it's time the manager has to go.

Davy: Goodbye, Jimmy. Thanks for the Scottish Cup memories. We need someone for the relegation battle we will obviously be in.
