Federico Chiesa out of Galatasaray game as Arne Slot faces Liverpool question

2 hours ago 2

Federico Chiesa has been omitted from Liverpool's squad that travelled to Turkey on Monday for the Champions League encounter against Galatasaray.

The winger was registered for the competition last week after initially not being named in the squad. He is available and not injured but, unusually, Arne Slot has decided to leave Chiesa in Liverpool.

The decision comes after Chiesa has seemingly played his back into the Dutchman's plans. Then former Juventus man was the star performer against Southampton in the Carabao Cup and scored once again after coming off the bench in the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

That was his fourth goal involvement in just 153 minutes this season, and Chiesa has played in five of Liverpool's six Premier League matches this season.

Chiesa trained with Liverpool on Monday and was expected to be named in the squad.

Yet when the 21-man squad was confirmed ahead of the game, the 27-year-old was not included. Armin Pesci and Trey Nyoni, who also trained with Liverpool on Monday, were not selected in the senior squad.

Slot will likely give an update in his pre-match press conference, which will be held in Istanbul on Monday evening (19:00 BST/14:00 ET/11:00PT).
