Federico Chiesa has spoken about how special it was to win the Premier League title last season, but explained that two moments from his career outstrip that triumph at Liverpool.
The Italian joined the Reds last year from Juventus but played a limited role as Arne Slot’s side breezed to a record-equalling 20th top-flight success. Chiesa played just six times as Liverpool claimed top spot, with his only start coming after the title was secured.
Unsurprisingly, he regards the trophies in which he played a pivotal role in winning as his proudest achievements in soccer, with Chiesa boasting several notable winners’ medals.
Liverpool’s no.14 was part of the Italian national team that won the European Championships in 2021, with the now 28-year-old playing in all seven matches and scoring in knockout victories over Austria and Spain.
Chiesa also won the Italian Cup twice with Juve and netted the winning goal in the 2021 final.
Speaking in a recent interview with Sky, Chiesa was asked about winning the Premier League and said: “It was so special because it was my first championship.
“Even though I didn’t play that much last year, winning it at Liverpool for Liverpool, playing with amazing players, it was just amazing. Even though I didn’t participate that much, but I was glad I won that trophy."
Pushed on his other career highlights, Chiesa said: “I guess the European Championships has to be at the top because winning for your country is just amazing. Then one for Juventus, but after that it is the Premier League.”
Chiesa has already played a more significant role for Liverpool this season than he did last term, making seven Premier League appearances.
The winger has provided a goal and two assists after coming off the bench, and also set up both goals in the 2-1 Carabao Cup win against Southampton in September.
He has benefited from the summer squad turnover, with Chiesa up to speed with Slot’s expectations before the season began, unlike several of his new teammates.
However, Chiesa has backed one of those recruits to have a significant impact once he has fully adapted to the Premier League.
“He is one of the best players I have ever seen on the ball,” the Italian said when asked about Florian Wirtz.
“The way he controls the ball, the way he touches the ball is just world-class. Of course, he has everything to be a success at Liverpool, there’s nothing holding him back.
“He came from another league, he has to have some time, that is normal. But the player is just amazing from what I’ve seen.”
