The FIFA president Gianni Infantino has suggested that he supports the idea of AC Milan playing Como in Australia, as long as regulations follow.
Due to the unavailability of San Siro because of the Winter Olympics, there has been a lot of talk about a possible fixture away from Italy for Milan, which has been divisive from the start. Earlier this week, it was confirmed the game can go ahead in Australia, thanks to a decision from UEFA.
The ruling that both Milan and Barcelona (who will play Villarreal abroad) can host games away from their home country due to the circumstances they face has ignited a real war of words. For example, Adrien Rabiot criticised the plans, and then the Serie A CEO told him he is well paid enough to not complain.
Infantino spoke at the EFC assembly in Rome and was asked about some of the more pressing topics in world football at the moment, including the game in Australia. His comments were relayed by Calciomercato.com.
Serie A is going to Australia for Milan-Como. Is that something FIFA likes?
“In football, we have an international and national structure. It’s a structure that has made football the number one sport in the world, but it’s just one match. I think our thinking needs to be broader.
“We want everyone to play wherever they want, but we want something with rules. It was a proposal from the Italian League, but it needs to be regulated in any case. Deregulation in this area doesn’t help anyone.”
